To Buff or To Sand Hardwood Flooring

Updated: Aug 27, 2021

There is no other type of flooring that can increase your home's market value like hardwood flooring does. As the real estate market improves, home owners looking to sell their homes can face the challenge of making their existing wood flooring look like new without completely replacing the floors. Hardwood floor's one uniques feature is that it can be buffed or sanded, resurfacing a fresh layer of wood. But when is it advisable to just buff the floor or to sand it? Before we answer that let us first define the difference between buffing and sanding hardwood floors. Keep in mind that only engineered or solid wood floors can be sanded or buffed and that the current state of the flooring's wear layer plays a big factor on whether sanding of buffing is doable.

Buffing Hardwood Flooring is a procedure that is sometimes referred to as cleaning hardwood floors or polishing wood flooring. It makes use of less abrasive sand paper to remove existing imperfections. On the other hand, Sanding Hardwood Floor makes use of a more abrasive grade of sanding paper.

Hardwood Floor buffing is recommended when the objective is to give the floor a quick face lift. It can remove light scratches or stain on the finish after buffing, a coat of polyurethane finish is applied to give the floor a polished look. Buffing hardwood floors does not remove deep scratches that have penetrated through the finish. It doe not take care of dents, wood discoloration or stains. However, it cost less than sanding and refinishing your hardwood floors, produces less dust when done professionally, takes off less wear layer compared to sanding and requires a lot less time to complete.

Sanding hardwood floors is a more thorough way of removing more serious imperfections on the wood. It is recommended when the objective is to remove deep scratches or gauges in the wood, remove water damage stain marks or pet urine stains, and also to remove existing wood stain color if you want to change or put new stain color onto your wood floors. This procedure can produce much more dust compared to buffing if not done professionally. Areas that are not to be sanded and furniture are to be covered efficiently and clean up after wards have to be thorough, for it will greatly affect the next step. It is followed by the refinishing of the hardwood floor in which normally three coats of polyurethane finish is applied. This process of Sanding and refinishing your hardwood floors restores and rejuvenates the life of your wood flooring.

As mentioned above, the wear layer of your existing wood floor is essential in determining whether these procedures are applicable. We recommend consulting a hardwood flooring professional to determine if the wood planks are still good for buffing or sanding.
